**********************************************************

An exhibition entitled "Commentary x Humour = Cartoons before and after the 1911 Revolution" will be held at the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum from tomorrow (June 17) until October 10, introducing the situation in China in the late Qing period and the revolutionary road to the establishment of Republican China through about 70 images of cartoons published before and after the 1911 Revolution and other relevant artefacts.

Officiating at the opening ceremony today (June 16), the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, said that holding the exhibition at the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum is significant as this year is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr Sun Yat-sen as well as the 105th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution. She also expressed her warmest gratitude to the Administration of Culture, Press, Publication, Radio and Television of Guangzhou Municipality for its support and the Memorial Museum of 1911 Revolution for lending items from its collection, which together has contributed to the success of the exhibition.

Other officiating guests included the Deputy Director of the Administration of Culture, Press, Publication, Radio and Television of Guangzhou Municipality, Ms Ou Caiqun, and the Museum Director of the Hong Kong Museum of History, Ms Belinda Wong.

A large number of original cartoons sprang up in China during the early 20th century. Cartoons of this era were mostly satire of current affairs, expressing cartoon artists' perspectives on the political circumstances in China and even the global situation. Cartoons offered an effective vehicle to highlight the crux of a matter through exaggerated drawings, and easily conveyed the messages within to ordinary people. They also helped disseminate information, functioned as revolutionary propaganda, and awakened people's awareness of the current situation.

This exhibition presents important chapters of modern Chinese history clearly and vividly through cartoons and artefacts of the time, revealing from different perspectives the lead-up to the 1911 Revolution and its impact on China.

The exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Memorial Museum of 1911 Revolution, and organised by the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum.
