Secretary for Home Affairs visits Sha Tin (with photos)
*******************************************************

The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, visited Sha Tin today (June 9) to observe initiatives for the creation of space and building of community facilities. He also met with members of Sha Tin District Council for an overview of the district and to learn about its latest developments.

Accompanied by District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho, and the Chairman of Sha Tin District Council, Mr Ho Hau-cheung, Mr Lau first visited the project site for the creation of space in Sha Tin under the District-led Actions Scheme. The site is situated beneath the flyover on Sha Lek Highway near To Shek Street/Sha Tin Wai Road, with an area of about 5 000 square metres. The proposed project aims to make use of unused land in Sha Tin to gradually create open space for multi-purpose activities, targeting young people and families in the district. Besides offering effective utilisation of district resources, it will also help promote community participation and social cohesion.

In light of the actual circumstances of Sha Tin, three projects under the District-led Actions Scheme will be given priority, namely (1) stepping up of anti-mosquito measures/grass cutting to improve public environmental hygiene; (2) tackling illegal parking of bicycles to improve management of public areas; and (3) creation of space to address district needs, so as to further promote the concept of "addressing district issues at the local level and capitalising on local opportunities". Annual milestones and targets are being planned to facilitate implementation of each project in the hope of achieving tangible and sustainable results.

Mr Lau then met with members of Sha Tin District Council to exchange views and learn more about the overall development of Sha Tin and issues of concern in the district.

To celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, Mr Lau also watched the Dragon Boat Race 2016 held at the Shing Mun River and officiated at the prize presentation ceremony.
