***********************************************************

The Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, today (February 4) visited a day care centre for the elderly and several elderly residents in Pak Tin Estate, Sham Shui Po, and extended warm regards for the Chinese New Year to them.

Mr Chan first arrived at the Po Leung Kuk Sham Shui Po Day Care Centre for the Elderly in the morning. He was briefed by the Principal Social Services Secretary (Elderly and Rehabilitation Services) of the Po Leung Kuk, Mr Lam Muk-kwan, and the centre-in-charge of care, nursing and support services. He chatted with elderly persons who were taking part in recreational activities and rehabilitation exercises there about their lives.

The day care centre serves elderly people aged 60 or above living in Sham Shui Po and Wong Tai Sin districts and not receiving institutional services. It provides services to senior citizens who are assessed as having a moderate or severe level of impairment by the Standardised Care Need Assessment Mechanism for Elderly Services and are suitable for day care services. In addition to providing personal and nursing care services, it offers counselling and referral services, as well as support to carers.

Mr Chan then went to the Sham Shui Po District Elderly Community Centre of the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council (NAAC) and chatted with elderly service users. Accompanied by the Executive Director of the NAAC, Mr Tung Chi-fat, he also visited an elderly singleton and an elderly couple living in Pak Tin Estate to understand their daily lives and needs for social care services. During the chats with the elderly residents, Mr Chan reminded them to keep warm during the cold weather. He also presented festive gifts to them and wished them good health and happiness.

The Sham Shui Po District Elderly Community Centre provides services for the elderly in the district. Its integrated home care services team offers household cleaning and catering services, as well as escorting services to medical consultations, for elderly people in need.

Mr Chan thanked the Po Leung Kuk and the NAAC for providing people-oriented services to the elderly, enabling them to lead happy and healthy lives. He also encouraged the community to show more care to elderly persons in the family and pay visits to them during the Chinese New Year, so that they can share the festive love and warmth.
