Response statement to media enquiries on drinking water quality at Kai Ching Estate
********************************************************

In response to media enquiries on the quality of drinking water at Kai Ching Estate in Kai Tak, a spokesman for the Housing Department (HD) issued the following statement today (July 5):

The HD has taken immediate action to test the quality of drinking water samples collected from 11 locations, including inside flat units, at Kai Ching Estate after learning the allegation earlier on. The laboratory results indicated that the lead content in all the water samples met the standard of the World Health Organization, i.e. below the provisional guideline value of 10 μg per litre for drinking water.

To ensure accuracy of the results, the testing of water samples has been conducted in consultation with Water Supplies Department (WSD) and performed by independent laboratories accredited under the Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme.

The HD has been and continue to be in contact with the WSD over the drinking water quality of Kai Ching Estate. If residents of Kai Ching Estate have doubts about the quality of the potable water supply to their units, the WSD will contact the HD to collect water samples at the flats for testing.
