The Statistics Advisory Board held a meeting today (May 28) to discuss official statistics work and its recent developments.
At the meeting, members provided suggestions on the publicity plan for the 2016 Population By-census (16BC). The plan, targeting different groups of audience, aims at raising public awareness of the 16BC and attracting respondents to use the e-Questionnaire (eQ) for self-enumeration.
The Commissioner for Census and Statistics and Chairman of the Statistics Advisory Board, Mr Leslie Tang, said, "The publicity campaign aims to solicit public support in providing accurate information in the 16BC, by raising public awareness of the usefulness of the results of the by-census. Through our promotion, we hope more respondents will use the eQ, thereby boosting the overall response rate and thus, enhancing the overall data quality of the 16BC."
Members discussed the major findings of the 2014 Annual Earnings and Hours Survey, which provides data essential for analyses related to Statutory Minimum Wage.
Members also discussed the new round of earnings mobility study being undertaken by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) in collaboration with the Economic Analysis and Business Facilitation Unit. Results of the study would facilitate a better understanding of the earnings mobility situation of young post-secondary graduates from lower income families.
The Board noted the major statistical developments depicted in the 2015 Edition of An Outline of Statistical Development which was published on May 19, 2015.
The Statistics Advisory Board is a non-statutory advisory body which advises the Commissioner for Census and Statistics on matters pertaining to government statistical work. Its membership consists of established professionals of the business sector, academia and the community, which provides for a wide representation to assist the Commissioner in integrating views of data users, data suppliers and statisticians.
