The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (May 28) investigating two cases of Legionnaires' disease (LD).
The first case involves an 82-year-old man with underlying illness. He presented with fever, cough and shortness of breath since May 18. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital on May 20 and was admitted on the same day. He was transferred to Grantham Hospital on May 25 for further management. His clinical diagnosis is pneumonia. He is currently in stable condition.
His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen upon testing by the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the CHP.
Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient had no recent travel history. His home contact is asymptomatic. Investigations are proceeding.
The second case involves a 72-year-old man with underlying illness. He presented with fever, cough and haemoptysis since May 25. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit today for further management. His clinical diagnosis is pneumonia. He is currently in critical condition.
His urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen upon testing by PWH.
Investigations are proceeding.
These are the 13th and 14th LD cases reported to the CHP this year. In 2014 and 2013, 41 and 28 cases were recorded respectively.
