The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Film Development Council:
The local premiere of the film "Wonder Mama", which received financing from the Film Development Fund (FDF), will be held this evening (May 9). The production budget for the film was around $8 million, with government finance amounting to about $1.6 million.
The film, directed by Clifton Ko and starring Petrina Fung, Kenneth Tsang, Susan Shaw and Babyjohn Choi, is based on a true story about how a middle-aged woman, who is preparing for early retirement, tackles unexpected incidents in her family and love life. The film also depicts a variety of contemporary social phenomena in Hong Kong.
The film has been shown at several international film festivals, including the 2014 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, the 5th Beijing International Film Festival and the 2014 East Winds Film Festival in the UK.
The Chairman of the Hong Kong Film Development Council (FDC), Mr Ma Fung-kwok, said, "The film was produced through collaboration between an experienced director, veteran actors and actresses and up-and-coming filmmakers. I believe that the collaboration between the two generations of filmmakers will further invigorate the local film industry.
"The showing of 'Wonder Mama' at various international film festivals proves the attractiveness of Hong Kong films in international markets. The FDC will continue to encourage local filmmakers to take part in international film events, so as to promote Hong Kong films in the overseas market."
The Financial Secretary proposed in the 2015-16 Budget a further injection of $200 million into the FDF to boost the volume of local film production and nurture film talent. To date, 30 applications have been approved for financing under the FDF, involving total funding of $82.68 million.
