The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:
The Legislative Council Secretariat (the Secretariat) today (November 13) released a Research Brief on "Preparing for population ageing" to study the overseas experience in tackling ageing population.
The ageing population in Hong Kong has been growing due to low fertility rate and extended life expectancy in recent years. The challenges presented by an ageing population are not unique to Hong Kong. This Research Brief highlights various policy measures introduced by overseas places like Singapore, Sweden, France, Finland and the United Kingdom to tackle the challenges of ageing population.
In general, the measures adopted by the places studied include recruiting and retaining mature workers, promoting work-life balance for female population, and helping carers to balance work and caring responsibilities. In addition, these places have invested heavily in human capital and innovation to enhance productivity.
This is the first issue of the Research Brief for 2014-2015 as prepared by the Secretariat's Research Office of the Information Services Division with a view to enhancing information support for Members. It is a concise summary aiming at explaining a subject matter which may be of interest to Members and the general public.
The Research Brief is now available on the Legislative Council website at www.legco.gov.hk/research-publications/english/1415rb01-preparing-for-population-ageing-20141113-e.pdf.
