********************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence Steering Committee:

The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (July 11) presented the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (CEATE) (2013/2014) to 37 schoolteachers at an award presentation ceremony held at the Central Government Offices. The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, presented Certificates of Merit to 30 teachers.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the CEATE Steering Committee, Mr Duffy Wong, said, "The teaching practices of these teachers are innovative and inspiring. They provide diverse learning experiences to students, guide them to think from different perspectives and enhance their ability for self-directed learning. These teachers not only impart knowledge and skills to their students but also help them develop positive values and a healthy lifestyle."

Mr Wong said that this year's CEATE was the 10th since its launch in 2003/2004. More than 700 teachers had been awarded in the first two rounds of the 10 CEATEs. In the past decade, CEATE had succeeded in enhancing teachers' professional image and social status. The awarded teachers' professional standards and their dedication to education had also been well recognised by the community.

"The third round of the CEATE is about to start. To achieve better planning for the new round of the CEATE, the CEATE Steering Committee has conducted a comprehensive review. Based on the recommendations of the review, in the third round of the CEATE, the CEATE Steering Committee will continue to refine the assessment arrangements and awards, further strengthen the publicity work and encourage the awarded teachers to share their excellent teaching practices.

"I believe that in the future the CEATE will maximise its influence, motivate teachers to enhance their professional development and foster a culture of excellence in the teaching profession," he said.

Other officiating guests at today's ceremony were the Permanent Secretary for Education, Mrs Cherry Tse; the Chairman of the Education Commission, Dr Moses Cheng; the Chairman of the Curriculum Development Council, Professor Kenneth Young; the Chairman of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, Mr Rock Chen; and the Chairman of the CEATE Assessment Working Group (2013/2014), Professor Horace Ip.

This year's CEATE covered four themes, namely Curriculum Leadership; Liberal Studies; Personal, Social and Humanities Education Key Learning Area; and Physical Education Key Learning Area. A total of 148 nominations were received. Thirteen nominations (comprising 37 teachers) were selected for the Award for Teaching Excellence while 12 nominations (comprising 30 teachers) were presented with the Certificate of Merit.

Assessment of nominations focused on teachers' performance in the four domains of professional competence, student development, professionalism and commitment to the community, and school development.

The results of the CEATE (2013/2014) are available on the CEATE website (www.ate.gov.hk). "CEATE - Reflection of Excellent Teachers", a special TVB programme on exemplary teaching practices, will be broadcast on TVB Jade at 3.30pm on July 20 (Sunday).

Sharing activities on excellent teaching practices will be rolled out in the coming school year. Details will be announced on the CEATE website.

Nominations for the CEATE (2014/2015) will be accepted from July 14 to October 3. It will cover the Chinese Language Education Key Learning Area, the English Language Education Key Learning Area, and Moral and Civic Education. Related details will be uploaded to the CEATE website on July 14.
