Regarding the earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a male surgical ward, the spokesperson for Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital made the following update today (May 5):
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing and one more male patient aged 89 was confirmed as a VRE carrier without clinical symptoms. The patient is still hospitalised under isolation and medical surveillance and is in a serious condition due to an underlying illness.
The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation on the ward. The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
