****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Council for Sustainable Development:

Six projects, including building a sustainable community, promoting sustainable practices and sustainability reporting, have been approved under the Sustainable Development Fund (the Fund) to promote public awareness and the principles of sustainable development, the Chair of the Education and Publicity Sub-committee under the Council for Sustainable Development, Mrs Miranda Leung, said today (September 28).

The projects show a clear integration of the key sustainable development elements, including community and stakeholder involvement as well as other aspects relating to environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility, and will last from 12 to 24 months. The current round of applications was the ninth, with a total of 56 proposals received and some $7 million granted by the Fund.

     The six approved projects are:

* "Cultural Sustainable Project Through a Group of Cultural Service-Learning Ambassadors" by Lingnan University, Office of Service-Learning, for a period of 24 months with a grant of $1,200,144.

* "Upcycling - Action for Kwun Tong Community" by Hong Kong Women Workers' Association for a period of 18 months with a grant of $385,850.

* "3-Tree Sustainable Leadership Project" by St James' Settlement for a period of 12 months with a grant of $623,300.

* "Food Cherisher" by the Friends of the Earth (Hong Kong) for a period of 18 months with a grant of $1,284,700.

* "Create Life - Sustainable Lifestyle Initiatives" by the Community Art Network for a period of 17 months with a grant of $1,515,700.

* "Corporate Sustainability Reporting Platform in Hong Kong" by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for a period of 24 months with a grant of $1,953,425.

Details of the above projects, as well as projects previously funded by the scheme, can be accessed on www.susdev.gov.hk.0

"We believe that these projects will become models for wider dissemination of the sustainable development message and for creating a greater impact on various sectors of the community. They will also help to sustain the momentum of efforts by various stakeholders and non-government organisations in promoting sustainable development," Mrs Leung said.

The $100 million Fund was set up in 2003 to support community initiatives promoting the concept of sustainable development. A total of 51 projects have so far been approved for grants from the Fund, involving a total amount of some $49.3 million. The Fund will be open for the next round of applications in the last quarter of 2012. Applications from interested organisations and stakeholders as well as individuals are welcome.
