The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, today (September 6) congratulated Professor Rossa Chiu of the Department of Chemical Pathology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on winning the 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE).
"The award is a recognition of Professor Chiu's outstanding achievement as a young scientist who has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in scientific research and contributed towards the common good in the APEC region," Mr So said.
Professor Chiu's research focuses on the clinical applications of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. The Innovation and Technology Commission invited nominations from eight institutions funded by the University Grants Committee in April 2012 and eventually nominated Professor Chiu for the award. Professor Chiu was then selected by the APEC Industrial Science and Technology Working Group member economies as this year's winner.
The ASPIRE Prize was introduced in 2011 as an initiative to recognise young scientists (aged below 40) in the APEC region who have achieved excellence in scientific research on a selected theme, as evidenced by scholarly publications and co-operation with scientists from other APEC economies. The theme this year was health innovation.
