The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will stage two concerts, entitled "New 'Book of Genesis'", in September.
The concerts will take place at 8pm on September 22 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre, and at 3pm on September 23 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall. Under the baton of its principal guest conductor, Jimmy Chiang, the orchestra will perform Mozart's "Symphony No. 41 in C, K.551, 'Jupiter'", and the world premiere of Dr Yip Wai-hong's "New 'Book of Genesis'".
"New 'Book of Genesis'" is a production blending music, speech and graphics to present the seven days of creation. "The Bible is inspired by God, and for each and every one of us the feelings and perception may be different. I hope to share my belief with you all through my new work" said Dr Yip, the orchestra's music director. The production crew of "New 'Book of Genesis'" includes Vincent Wong (narration), Kenneth Tsang (oil painting) and Chih Leung (motion graphic design).
Winner of the first prize at the 4th International Competition of Young Conductors Lovro von Matacic in Zagreb, Croatia, Jimmy Chiang began his musical education in the piano at the age of 4 before going on to study composition and the violoncello. He received a Fellowship Diploma from the UK's Trinity College London, a Bachelor of Music degree from Baylor University in the US and a Magister Artium with distinction from the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, where he was the last student of the renowned Austrian conductor and Mozart interpreter Leopold Hager. In 2003, on the invitation of Seiji Ozawa, Chiang was one of three Fellow Conductors at the Rohm Music Festival in Kyoto, Japan, where he studied with the master himself.
Vincent Wong developed a keen interest in public speaking, from recitation to debates, and upon graduation from university he worked in an advertising agency before joining the Hong Kong Government as an Administrative Officer. He left the Government in 2000 to further his studies in the UK, where he was awarded an MBA from Cambridge University and an LLB from the University of London. He was appointed director of strategic planning at Commercial Radio (Hong Kong) in 2007, and currently hosts a programme on current affairs.
The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra aims to bring music to a wider audience in Hong Kong, especially the younger generation. The orchestra has performed frequently with a number of internationally famous conductors and soloists in Hong Kong for more than 30 years. By performing popular music and organising concert talks, the orchestra has been successful in introducing classical music and Chinese orchestral music to the public.
"New 'Book of Genesis'" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets ranging from $80 to $160 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for group bookings.
