The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, visited grass-roots citizens living in cubicle apartments and sub-divided flats this afternoon (August 16) to get a better understanding of their living conditions.
Mrs Lam first dropped by the Community Learning Centre of the Society for Community Organization where she visited grass-roots children in a tuition class. She showed her appreciation to a retired man who serves as a volunteer mentor there.
This was followed by visits to four grass-roots households, including a low-income family not on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA), single-parent families living on CSSA and a single person. Mrs Lam chatted with every household and listened to their views on daily needs, parenting and social welfare services.
"Grass-roots citizens have to face various difficulties in their daily lives. As stated in the Chief Executive's election manifesto, Hong Kong, as a generally affluent society, has all the necessary prerequisites to satisfy the basic needs of everyone in our community. The re-established Commission on Poverty will examine the aspirations of the grass roots in greater depth to ensure that the measures introduced can offer genuine assistance to groups in need," Mrs Lam said.
Members of the Preparatory Task Force on the Commission on Poverty Mr Law Chi-kwong and Mr Ho Hei-wah also joined today's visit.
