The International Students' Visual Arts Contest-cum-Exhibition of Hong Kong - Two-dimensional Visual Arts (2012), co-presented by the Education Bureau (EDB) and the Po Leung Kuk, received around 2,000 entries from 24 countries or regions.
A total of 54 winning entries are on display from 10am to 7pm at the Exhibition Gallery on 4/F of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui, from today (August 9) to August 13. Admission is free.
Themed "Image Imagination", the contest aimed to encourage young people to express their perceptions and thoughts through visual arts, so as to develop their creativity and deepen their artistic thinking. The presenters of the contest also hoped that the international event would promote cross-cultural exchanges and help adults to have a better understanding of young people by appreciating their visual arts works.
The contest was open to primary and secondary students all over the world. Twelve contestants from five countries or regions and aged between 5 and 18 were awarded the Hong Kong Grand Prizes. These students are from Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Thailand, the Republic of South Africa and Hong Kong. Five Hong Kong students were awarded Hong Kong Grand Prizes, and 19 students received Honourable Mentions.
The participants' diverse cultural backgrounds yielded a wide variety of styles and approaches in the artwork, especially in the 12 Hong Kong Grand Prize-awarded entries. Among them, Lay Tsz-sing of Hong Kong depicted passengers' diverse behaviour in the MTR compartment through contrasting static and dynamic depictions of the figures. This painting contrasted well with the Bulgarian winner's work, which features the moment of a girl's dream coming true in a poetic photograph.
The adjudicators of this contest included renowned experts in the field of art and art education from around the world.
