Members of the public are invited to take part in the Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition, with entries being accepted from today (May 19) until September 17.
Jointly organised by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Hong Kong Underwater Association (HKUA), the competition aims to promote the beauty of marine life and habitats in Hong Kong waters and enhance public awareness of conserving the marine environment.
"Participants should hold a valid diving licence. All entries must feature marine ecology, habitats or marine life in Hong Kong waters and they must be taken during the period from October 1, 2011 to September 17, 2012," a spokesman for AFCD said.
"The competition comprises photo and video categories. A champion, a first runner-up, a second runner-up and 10 outstanding awards will be selected for each category. Each winner will be awarded a trophy or a certificate. The winning entries will be shown in an exhibition to be held in October. In addition, the HKUA will select a best underwater photographer and a best underwater videographer, who may have a chance to represent Hong Kong and participate in overseas competitions. "
A workshop will be held for participants to learn more about underwater photography and videography techniques in the Lecture Hall of Hong Kong Space Museum on June 9.

Entries on discs and in duplicate together with the completed forms and photocopies of the diving licences should be submitted before September 17 by post or in person to the Marine Conservation Division (East), 7/F, AFCD, Cheung Sha Wan Government Offices, 303 Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon or HKUA, Room 1026, Olympic House, 1 Stadium Path, So Kon Po, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.
For the photo competition, participants may email their entries with the completed forms and photocopies of the diving licences to dickey_cc_lau@afcd.gov.hk or enquiry@hkua.org.hk.
Results will be announced on the department's website in October. Winners will be notified individually.
