May 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (May 18) the May 2012 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Analysis of Hong Kong's External Merchandise Trade by Mode of Transport", "Port Transhipment Cargo Statistics, 2006 to 2011" and "The Movement of the Unemployment Rate in 2011" are included.

"Analysis of Hong Kong's external merchandise trade by mode of transport"

     External merchandise trade is one of the important economic activities of Hong Kong.  Goods are brought into or out of Hong Kong by various means of transport.  In 2011, the value of Hong Kong's external merchandise trade by air accounted for 36.4% of Hong Kong's total value of trade in goods.  Another 35.9% was transported by land, 23.1% by ocean and 3.6% by river.  The remaining 1.0% was mainly postal parcels and accompanied goods of passengers travelling on various means of transport.

     This feature article analyses the performance and characteristics of Hong Kong's external merchandise trade by mode of transport during the period 2001 to 2011.

"Port transhipment cargo statistics, 2006 to 2011"

     Port transhipment cargo movements have contributed significantly to the growth of port cargo throughput of Hong Kong in recent years.  With an average annual growth rate of 6.2% between 2006 and 2011, port transhipment cargo movements took up 57.3% of port cargo throughput in 2011.  In particular, port transhipment cargo movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China (the Mainland) accounted for the largest share (40.3%) of Hong Kong's port transhipment cargo.  About 65.1% of Mainland-Hong Kong port transhipment cargo movements were between Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region.

     This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the port transhipment cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2006 to 2011.

"The movement of the unemployment rate in 2011"

     Labour market conditions, having staged a gradual turnaround in the second half of 2009, witnessed widespread and notable improvements over the course of 2010 and 2011, amidst the strong pick-up in economic activity and substantial job creation.  With improving labour demand, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased progressively from the peak at 5.5% in June - August 2009 to 3.2% in June - August 2011, and the figure for October - December 2011 was 3.3%.

     This feature article provides an analysis of the changes in unemployment rate in 2011 from various perspectives.  It aims to give readers a better understanding about the recent unemployment situation in Hong Kong.
