The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (January 19) appealed to the public to keep places clean and mind their safety while enjoying the Lunar New Year Fireworks Display on January 24 (the second day of the Lunar New Year).
The LCSD, together with law enforcement teams of relevant departments, will strengthen patrols in LCSD venues where large crowds are expected. Measures will be stepped up to tackle littering, illegal hawking and vandalism of public property.
These venues include the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) Piazza, the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, the Hung Hom Promenade, the Urban Council Centenary Garden, the Avenue of Stars, Middle Road Children's Playground, the Tsim Sha Tsui East Waterfront Podium Garden, the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade along the Kowloon waterfront and Tamar Park on the waterfront of Hong Kong Island.
A spokesman for the LCSD urged members of the public to take away their belongings and not to leave trash behind.
"Littering offenders will be subject to a fixed penalty of $1,500. Publicity materials will be displayed at the venues while additional cleaning staff and security guards will also be deployed.
As part of community support services, youth volunteers will help spread the message of keeping venues clean at the HKCC. They will also assist in the clean-up operation immediately after the fireworks display.
The spokesman also reminded people that the above-mentioned venues will be crowded during the fireworks display and they should stay calm and take special care of their safety, adding that they should pay attention to crowd management measures at the venues and follow police advice.
