Presented by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and the Home Affairs Bureau, "Genesis and Spirit: A Showcase of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China" will be staged in October.
The programme brings together an outstanding collection of Chinese ethnic and mainstream cultural items that have been inscribed on United Nationals Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)'s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage or China's National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Presented in two shows, the programme covers guqin music, excerpts of Cantonese Opera from the traditional paichang repertoire, ethnic music and dance, and much more. Performing at the shows are renowned artists and representative exponents of intangible cultural heritage at national level.
The programme includes nanyin music in "Song of the Ethereal Strings" by Wu Shaochuan, Zhou Chengzai, Zhuang Lifen and Xiao Peiling; guqin music in "Flowing Water" by Gong Yi (representative exponent of intangible cultural heritage at national level); and nong-ak music in the farmers' dance of China's Korean ethnic group "Celebrating a Bumper Harvest" by Jin Mingchun (representative exponent of intangible cultural heritage at national level), Li Zhefan and Dong Zhu.
Also in the line-up is the epic narrative manas musical performance "Manas the Hero" and "We Love to Sing Manas" by Saritahong Haderahong (representative exponent of intangible cultural heritage at national level) and Maiderbaike Makan, while haicaiqiang is presented by the "Marine Green Algae" singing of the Yi Ethnic Group in "Golden Birds and Silvery Birds Take Flight" and "A Toasting Song" by Li Huaxiu and Li Huaifu.
The grand song of the Dong ethnic group, "Song of the Cicada", will be staged by the Young Performing Group of Xiaohuang Village, Congjiang County, Guizhou Province, and janggo, the hourglass drum dance of China's Korean ethnic group, is to be showcased in "Janggo Dance" by Li Meixiang, Jin Meilan and Luo Xuemei. Rounding out the programme are folk songs from the Mongolian "Utin Duur" and "Khoomi" repertoires, "The Brown Eagle" and "The Boundless Grassland" by Arukhan, Menghedalai and Anggerik; Cantonese opera in "Trapped in a Valley" performed by Law Kar-ying; and the waist-drum gozhuo dance of Tibet, "Spring Tide on the Nyag-Chu River", by Nima and Dawa.
"Genesis and Spirit: A Showcase of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China", organised by the China National Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, will be staged at 8pm, on October 11 and 12 (Tuesday and Wednesday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $320, $240, $180 and $100 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
