Helen Cha, one of the most active local young pianists, will give a recital in September. The performance will feature Franck-Bauer's "Prelude, Fugue et Variation", Schumann's "Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13", Liszt's "Spanish Rhapsody", Fazil Say's "Paganini Jazz" and Prokofiev's "Sonata No. 7 in B-flat, Op. 83".
Rising local talent Helen Cha is known for her refined musicianship and academic competency. She is currently the Co-ordinator for the Associate Degree in Performance Studies at the Hong Kong Baptist University and a part-time lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In 2003, Cha became the first Hong Kong student awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Cha claimed top prizes at the 12th Hong Kong (Asia) Piano Open Competition Open Class, the concerto competitions at Piano Texas (2006), the Eastman School of Music (2007) and the Thousand Islands International Chopin Competition (2009). Cha has performed solo recitals in North America, Europe and the Mainland, and has collaborated with various orchestras including the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Shanghai in 1984, Cha studied with Poon Tak and Gabriel Kwok starting at the age of 9, and finished her bachelor's degree with first-class honours in 2005 at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Twice awarded a scholarship by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, she furthered her postgraduate studies at the prestigious Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Nelita True. In May 2010, she was chosen as the Doctoral Marshal for the 2010 Commencement Ceremony by the Dean of the Eastman School based on her professional achievements, and she has become one of the youngest Doctorate of Musical Arts holders in Hong Kong.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Piano Recital by Helen Cha" will be held at 8pm on September 28 (Wednesday) at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $150 and $100 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A special booking discount will be offered for purchases of standard tickets for two concerts in the "Our Music Talents" Series: "Piano Recital by Helen Cha" and "Anonymous Quartet".
