More than 940 000 people have registered as volunteers with the Social Welfare Department, giving their time and effort to serve those in need.
The Volunteer Performance Services Team from the Agency for Volunteer Service visits a seniors' home in Tseung Kwan O monthly, hosting a one-hour variety show. They not only entertain the elderly, but befriend them and brighten their day.
For the past five years, the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer volunteer team has worked with a social-service group to organise summer-holiday activities for children in Yau Ma Tei, most of whom are South Asian. With such close contact, the volunteers can instil in the children some positive values, which helps them to integrate into the community.
