The Leisure and Cultural Services Department is presenting the Boundless Multi-media Series this September. One of the many attractions in the series is "A Performative Communication - Blending Worlds" by legendary local indie duo Primary Shapes and renowned scratchmaster DJ Tommy, which will involve an explosion of aural codes.
This is the first time the performers have come together for a production. The local talents will team up with acclaimed designers including Ewing Chan, Mak Chi-wing, Ma Lap-yin, Allen Fung and more to create a stunning aural-visual experience and tell a story of how the mysterious codes embedded in crop circles connect to the artists' reflections on diverse issues - intrinsic conflicts of the mind, confrontation between reality and dreams, and problems with language in communication.
The story of the show is about a binary-coded message sent via radio transmission through the sky in 1974. A reply was received at a crop circle in 2001. Was it a proliferating communication with extra-terrestrials? Or was it the astounding work of an artist with unknown skills that surpass our knowledge? The message is clear: "I am great!"
Primary Shapes is a collaborative effort between two core members, composer-singer Tang Chi-wai and sound designer-writer Yuen Cheuk-wa. Their sold-out multi-media production "Eternal Golden Braid" received high acclaim. DJ Tommy is Hong Kong's premier scratchmaster and is a renowned producer. He has won numerous scratchmaster competitions all over the world. DJ Tommy has played at gigs around the world, including in Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Korea and Russia.
Primary Shapes will also share their journey in creating the collaborative work with DJ Tommy in the "Blending Worlds: Creation & Communication" workshop. The focus will be on how the multi-media performance discusses communication that was seeded from the mysterious crop circles. The artists will also talk about the explorations in their past productions. Participants can experience partial stage effects through the music installations during the hands-on session.

The workshop (conducted in Cantonese) will be held at 3pm on September 25 (Sunday) at AC2, 4/F, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Tickets are priced at $50. In addition, a post-performance talk with free admission will be held on September 16 (Friday).
