May 2008 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

    The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (May 20) the May 2008 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

    In this issue, two feature articles entitled 䩕Statistics on Research and Development of Hong Kong, 2002 to 2006蒅 and 䩕The Chinese Medicine Sector in Hong Kong, 2007蒅 are included.

䩕Statistics on Research and Development of Hong Kong, 2002 to 2006蒅

    Research and development (R&D) is one of the key forces for technological advancement.  This feature article aims to provide an overall picture of the R&D activities in Hong Kong, with separate analysis presented for the business, higher education and government sectors.

    Compared with 2005, the total number of R&D personnel in 2006 increased by 4% to 23 000.  Total R&D expenditure in 2006 amounted to HK$11.9 billion, representing a 9% increase over 2005.  Total R&D expenditure as a ratio to Gross Domestic Product had gone up from 0.59% in 2002 to 0.81% in 2006.

䩕The Chinese Medicine Sector in Hong Kong, 2007蒅

    In Hong Kong, Chinese medicine is popularly used to cure various kinds of diseases.  The Chinese medicine sector comprises : (a) manufacture of Chinese medicines; (b) distribution of Chinese medicines, like wholesale, retail and import and export trades; and (c) practising Chinese medicine, like Chinese medicine practitioners of general practice, acupuncture and bone-setting.

    This feature article discusses the updated situation of the Chinese medicine sector in Hong Kong, including the manufacture of Chinese medicines, the distribution of Chinese medicines, the practice of Chinese medicine practitioners and the university programmes on Chinese medicine.

    Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
