Learning music in a fun-filled summer camp and sharing experience with other budding musicians may be the best way for young musicians to spend their summer holidays.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Music Office is now inviting applications for the "2008 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp". A well-received annual summer programme, the camp enables young musicians to receive training from renowned overseas and Mainland musicians in a scenic and natural environment.
The "2008 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp" will be held from July 20 to 26 (Camp A) and July 27 to August 2 (Camp B) at the Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre. Qualified young musicians aged 9 to 25 are welcome to apply.
Residential campers may choose to join one of the music groups including Symphony Orchestra, Junior Chinese Orchestra and Children's Choir in Camp A, and Chinese Orchestra, Junior String Orchestra and Symphonic Band in Camp B. There is a $850 camp fee per person for the seven-day-and-six-night music camp to be paid by successful applicants.
Day camp at $45 per person per day is also available from July 21 to August 1 for organisations, families and any other combinations of individuals to share the delightful music activities, such as visits to orchestras, band and choir rehearsals, mini concerts, musical games and various kinds of recreational facilities and activities in camp.
Renowned musicians participating in this year's training programme include the Associate Director of Orchestras and Assistant Professor of Conducting at the University of Michigan (USA), Mr Andrew George; Conductor of China Oriental Song and Dance Ensemble and Guest Professor of the Faculty of Music at the Chinese People's Liberation Army Institute of the Arts, Mr Yang Chunlin; Founder and Laureate Conductor of the Toronto Children's Chorus (Canada), Ms Jean A Bartle; Executive Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Dean of the Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba (Canada), Dr Dale J Lonis, and Principal Cellist with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Conductor of the Devon County String Orchestra (England), Ms Naomi Butterworth.
Campers will take part in an intensive orchestral, band or choral training programme conducted by overseas and Mainland musicians to enhance musical skills as well as participate in the recreational activities at the campsite.
Two concerts will be held in July and August at the conclusion of the camp to showcase the campers' achievements.
Application forms are available from the Music Office's music centres, or from the website, www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. The deadlines for applications for the residential camp and day camp are April 15 and May 16 respectively.
