Turbot test results released
****************************

A turbot sample collected at a stall was found to contain a trace amount of nitrofurans.

The fish sample was collected by the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) at a regular inspection in the Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market.

"The level of nitrofurans detected was 0.0018 ppm. The presence of nitrofurans in food is unacceptable, as consumption of these chemicals over a prolonged period may cause cancer. The level of nitrofurans currently detected is low, and normal consumption should not pose serious health risks to consumers," a CFS spokesman said today (April 3).

"The stall owner has been asked to stop selling the turbot in question. The CFS will consider taking out prosecution.

"The centre is following up on the source of supply."

The spokesman said the CFS would continue to carry out inspections and closely monitor the situation.
