The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the "Hong Kong Stories Series" from April to August.
The first programme in the series is Mcmuimui Dansemble's dance theatre, "Flesh Dance".
In this multi-media dance, the co-founders of the ensemble, Abby Chan and Yeung Wai Mei, will review how social trends, popular culture and the public sphere have affected the identity and body of individuals, particularly middle aged women, through songs, gadgets, wit and zany humour.
The duo will share with audiences the sweet and sour experiences of their best decade of life by choreographing a feast of dance pieces named after appetisers, entrees and desserts.
Mcmuimui Dansemble was founded in 1997 by independent contemporary dance choreographers and dancers Abby Chan and Yeung Wai Mei, who are also activists in the local theatre scene. Before founding the ensemble, the dancers had collaborated on "Running Wheels" and "Siesta" in New York (1996) and Hong Kong (1997). The ensemble's first full-length production "Something Strange in the Air" wowed the audience in 1998 at the Independent Dance Festival in Hong Kong. It later toured the Tokyo International Dance Festival, Taipei Crown Theatre Festival and Seoul International Dance Festival. In 2005, their second full-length production "Love in a Doggy Bag" premiered at the Fringe Festival in Hong Kong and was later performed at the Huayi Festival in Singapore. It won the Hong Kong Dance Award in 2006.
"Flesh Dance" will be staged at 8pm on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, and at 3pm on Sunday, April 13, at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. A meet-the-artists session will be held after Saturday's performance. Ticket prices of the performances are $140 and $200.
Other highlights of the "Hong Kong Stories Series" include "Medi.C", to be performed on June 27 and 28 by another local choreographer Daniel Yeung.
Tickets for "Flesh Dance" and "Medi.C" are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to a combined purchase of tickets to "Flesh Dance" and "Medi.C". A maximum discount of 20% is offered for various booking schemes.
