The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (January 22) the January 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, two feature articles entitled "External Direct Investment Statistics" and "Salary Statistics of Middle-Level Managerial and Professional Employees 1997-2006" are included.
"External Direct Investment Statistics"
Direct investment represents external investment which allows an investor in one economy to have a lasting interest and a significant degree of influence or effective voice in the management of an enterprise in another economy.
At the end of 2005, the position of Hong Kong's inward direct investment and outward direct investment at market value continued to be substantial, amounting to $4,056.3 billion and $3,653.9 billion respectively. Their ratios to GDP in that year were 293% and 264% respectively.
In 2005, DI inflow and outflow were $261.5 billion and $211.5 billion respectively. Taking DI inflow and outflow together, there was a net inflow of $50.0 billion.
This feature article presents an analysis of inward and outward direct investment of Hong Kong in 2005, based on the findings of the Survey of External Claims, Liabilities and Income conducted by the Census and Statistics Department, supplemented by data from other sources.

"Salary Statistics of Middle-Level Managerial and Professional Employees 1997-2006"
This feature article describes the movements of the salaries of middle-level managerial and professional employees in major economic sectors in the past 10 years. Statistics of employees' entitlement to various kinds of fringe benefits are also presented. Over the past decade, the average annual salary increase for the middle-level managerial and professional employees, as measured by Nominal Salary Index (A), was 1.1%. However, there was an apparent variation in the rate of change of salary throughout the period. The average annual rate of change of salary was 2.6% for the period 1997-2001. It reversed to the average annual decrease of 1.7% for the period 2002-2004 and then rose up at an average annual rate of 1.4% for the period 2005-2006. The significant reversion during the period 2002-2004 reflected the on-going downward adjustment in costs and prices in the local economy. The rise from 2005 was mainly due to the effect of the increase in consumer price.
