CE speaks at launching dinner for the TaoHo Foundation (English only) (With Photos)
*******************************************************

Following is the speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the launching dinner for the TaoHo Foundation at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre this (June 21) evening (English only):

Mrs Ho, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I am delighted to be among so many friends this evening to witness the launch of the TaoHo Foundation and to pay tribute to TaoHo's distinguished achievements in the realms of art, design and architecture.

The TaoHo Foundation, of which I am proud to be the Patron, has a laudable mission: that is to nurture talents in various design forms and to enrich the cultural fabric of Hong Kong.  TaoHo has inspired a generation of creative talents in our community.  The TaoHo Foundation will keep the artistic spirit in this city alive by giving encouragement to promising young designers who follow the master's footsteps.

Time does not allow me to give an exhaustive account of TaoHo's accomplishments. But there are a few that cannot escape a mention tonight. The SAR flag and emblem top this list. Their design captures the essence of "One Country, Two Systems", symbolising Hong Kong's energy within the framework of our nation. Many well-known landmarks in Hong Kong bear TaoHo's name, from the Hong Kong Arts Centre to the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. TaoHo's artistic flair comes through not only groundbreaking new structures. He is also adept at preserving Hong Kong's past by renovating some of our historic buildings, including my current residence, Government House.

TaoHo shines as a sculptor, too. One of his masterpieces, Synergy of Dynamic Energy installed at the Hong Kong International Airport, has impressed millions of visitors to this city.

TaoHo's exceptional and diverse talents have been widely recognised around the world. Among his many awards and honours, TaoHo has won several prizes from the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and was presented with the prestigious Crystal Award in 1997 by the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.  He has also led many high profile projects in the Mainland and overseas.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am much heartened to see the enthusiastic response to the establishment of the TaoHo Foundation. There is hardly a better way to pay homage to an artistic virtuoso of our times.

Thank you very much.
