The public is invited to enjoy a day filled with fun and creativity at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre on April 15.
To celebrate its 14th anniversary, the centre will hold an "Open Day" with a series of art programmes including demonstrations, children's workshops, an exhibition, studio tours, an art happening, artwork display stalls, live performances, street dance and film shows.
The open day will run from 10am to 9pm. People can take this opportunity to tour the centre's studios and take part in various demonstrations including wood carving, ceramics, portraiture, printmaking and metal sculpture. Children can make their own artistic creations under the guidance of an instructor in the "Fun for Kids" workshop.
Visitors should not miss the exhibition - "Asian Traffic ﷿ Contemporary Art", featuring an innovative and daring Asian artist from Australia, and a special exhibition of artworks by more than 22 local artists.
Live performances, such as clown shows, mime, hip-hop & street dance, an accordion quintet, saxophone and guitar recitals, and the happening "The Art of Frog King" will rove around the centre that day.
Film-goers can view the film shows "Film Montage: The Projection of Modernity" and "The Orphan" featuring Bruce Lee and Ng Cho-fan.
Conducted in Cantonese, all programmes are free. Twenty places are available for demonstrations, workshops, the happening, and studio tours while 70 places are available for for film shows, hip-hop street dance and accordion quintet. Apart from those requiring enrolment in advance, all programmes places are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Visual Arts Centre, converted from a former British barrack block ﷿ Cassels Block, is under the administration of the Art Promotion Office. It provides well-equipped studios for trained art practitioners in sculpture, printmaking and ceramics, encouraging them in their artistic pursuits and in holding different kinds of visual arts activities. In addition to nine studios, there are supporting facilities such as a lecture theatre, a twin-room exhibition hall and a multi-purpose room, open for hire to artists and art groups. Moreover, the centre organises art activities of various forms, including art courses, exhibitions, demonstrations, lectures, artist-in-residence and art sale services. Focusing on the promotion of and training in visual arts, the centre is a place for exchange of ideas among artists and nurturing of budding artists.
The Visual Arts Centre is located at 7A Kennedy Road, Central, Hong Kong. It is open every day except Tuesdays from 10am to 9pm.
